Listening post

The weird and wonderful, presented for your listening pleasure. An open mind shall be required when listening to some of these!

AC/DC - Big Balls
Weirdest effing song they ever wrote, but they are AC/DC, so they can do anything!
Andrew Ridgeley - Baby Jane
From his ill-fated 1990 solo album Son Of Albert. A slow blues number which features the line "I was dumb and a prick!"
Bee Gees - Completely Unoriginal
The Brothers Gibb indulge in a little silliness during a studio warm-up. Certainly one of the most original songs they have ever written!
Benny Hill - What A World
The classic British comedian in Bob Dylan mode. Taken from the album Benny Hill Sings?
Billy Briggs - Chew Tobacco Rag No.2
The follow up to his first Chew Tobacco Rag, released in 1951. This one encouraged us to join him in spitting!
Billy Connolly - Isn't It A Shame
Taken from the live album Raw Meat For The Balcony.

Bobby Kalphat - Counter Punch
An obscure 70s reggae cut. The original pressing had the most unfortunate misprint on its label!
Brentford All Stars - Greedy G
A dub track from a reggae outfit, yet sounding more soul than reggae. Heavily based on James Brown's Get On The Good Foot.
Cecil Young Progressive Quartet - Who Parked The Car
Crazy beatnik jazz from the 50s, an orgy of scat and bongos.

Dan Satch - Woman Pin Down
Hailing from Nigeria, an example of West African "highlife" at it's finest.

Electric Light Orchestra - Who's That
Finally released in 2000 on the Flashback box set, this 1983 cut sees Jeff and the boys having a Monty Python moment.
Elvis Presley - Old MacDonald
The King of Rock'n'Roll is seriously misbehaving!

Half Man Half Biscuit - 24 Hour Garage People
Taken from a BBC session for Andy Kershaw. The band are signed to Probe Plus, which describes itself as: "Music to drive you to drink".
Idle Race - Mrs Ward
A pre-ELO Jeff Jynne with one of his anti-war songs. Wonderfully delivered in a Birmingham accent.
Jasper Carrott - Funky Moped
Produced by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne, and featuring fellow band members Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy.
Kanui And Lula - Oua Oua
Hawaiian blues promises to be the next big thing!

Karl Matthews - Kat Slater
Karl suffers from Asperger's, and has a specialist knowledge of both reggae music and Eastenders. Seems only fair to combine the two!
Kay L Gale - How I Love That Flag
A legend in her home town of Fort Worth, Texas. Stream of consciousness lyrics to a marching polka beat.
Mahir - She Can Stay My Home
Mahir Cagri became an internet celebrity in 1999 with his site in broken English proclaiming: "I kiss you!" The original Borat.
M|A|R|R|S - Anitina (The First Time I See She Dance)
While Pump Up The Volume became popular in 1987, its double-A-side lay forgotten. A collaboration between AR Kane and Colourbox.
Nat Baldwin - Only In My Dreams
A very minimalist song featuring just a vocal and cello. As featured in the Orange telecom advert.
Neasden Connection - Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1
A rather interesting reggae interpretation of a classical piece.

Nola Campbell - Searching For My Baby
An obscure Northern soul number. Described by Kenny Everett as "One of the greatest out of tune records of all time!"
Noveltones - Left Bank Two
The highly familiar theme to Vision On. Is there a better TV theme tune than this?
OMFO - Magic Mamaliga
As featured in the Borat soundtrack. From the project Trans Balkan Express.
One Of You - Faded Flowers
A woman who left Czechoslovakia for Toronto. Crushed by the ugliness of the West, she wrote songs about her feelings of alienation and sadness.
P Hux - Don't Bring Me Down
A refreshing take on the ELO classic! Also featuring the vocals of former ELO members Mik Kaminski and the late Kelly Groucutt.
People Like Us - Abridged Too Far
DJ and multimedia artist Vicki Bennett, has recorded sound collages since 1992. John Peel is tucked away in here somewhere.
Shirehorses - Bellow
Mark & Lard give us their take on the whiny Coldplay song. Certainly a more listenable vocal on this version.
Soapbox Story - Lost And Found
Soapbox Story is the inspiration of one man, Will Hunt.

Soonkay Lisa - What I Want Out of Life
A rare soul number from a colourfully-named Hawaiian artist. Borrows heavily from a certain Stevie Wonder song.
Superpops - London Dear London
Released on the unfortunately-named Pony Trap label (Pony and Trap is Cockney rhyming slang for crap).
Tea And Symphony - Nothing Will Come Of Nothing
Taken from the psyched-out progressive/folk weirdo ensemble's debut album An Asylum for the Musically Insane.
Terry Jacks - Put The Bone In
The original B-side to Seasons In The Sun, and a seriously morbid one at that! Covered by Soul Asylum for some odd reason.
Tesco Value - Gunshot
Normally I cannot stand drum & bass - let alone the homophobe Sizzla, but it does come emblazoned in the familiar Tesco Value look!
The 5 6 7 8's - Woo Hoo
As featured in the film Kill Bill, and also in adverts for Vonage and Carling. The choice of soccer loving meatheads!
The Boy Least Likely To - Faith
If all your childhood stuffed animals got together and started a band, it would more than likely sound like this.
The Television Personalities - 14th Floor
From the punk era, this song sounds truly 'home made'. Nowadays it is very reminiscent of Blur.
Tom Wilson - All American Boy
Tom sings about all the stuff he does.

Tony Capstick - Capstick Comes Home
The premise of the record was to poke fun at the Hovis commercial of the day, which featured the now famous "Hovis music". Eee!
Usha Uthup - The Pressure Cooker Of Love
An established Indian jazz singer, this comes from her most peculiar 1984 album Blast-Off.
Wicksteed - Sleazy Benjamin
An humorous unsigned band from Basingstoke who sadly folded.

William Hung - She Bangs
William gained fame in 2004 as a result of his off-key performance on American Idol. How can you not love him!
